Cut My Timber
Cut My Timber is a large and technologically advanced network of experienced timber engineers and fabricators. They use BIM and 3DCAD models provided by the contractor, to input into their computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer-numeric-controlled robots (CNC), which are used to produce timber and timber components for buildings. By making use of excess capacity at existing fabricators, they are able to make highly complex and efficient building systems available locally to both large and small companies, as well as to individual independent builders.
The emphasis is on constructing buildings of extreme complexity both affordably and reliably. They make appropriate use of arising BIM technology. They represent a link in the supply chain that does not currently exist in Australia but would potentially open up new possibilities for non-traditional forms of prefabrication and for new specialist fabricators to enter the market. The technology is best suited to complex or specialist situations as the technology can produce a batch quantity of "one", relatively efficiently.
Investment in the appropriate technology and associated infrastructure is required.
This approach could lend itself to operating under a Co-op arrangement - similar to that used by some other industries to mitigate and share the risk/cost of significant capital investment.
Structurecraft are a contractor specialising in the engineering, design detailing, supply and fabrication of complex, large and challenging timber structures. Though there is nothing especially groundbreaking about the panelized systems that they use, they occupy a worthwhile link in the supply chain that largely does not currently exist...
