SödraSmart is a manufactured timber framing member that can be used as a non-load bearing stud or plate for wall framing. The component is made of 3 pieces of timber glued together in a “C” section configuration, but with the proviso that mid-piece is non-continuous and instead consists of segmented blocking pieces with air gaps in between. Noggins can easily be fitted into the resulting stud voids. SödraSmart is produced as 45 mm x 70 mm and 45 mm x 95 mm, both with a length of 2.5 m or 2.7 m.
Features include dimensional stability, straightness, ease of services installation and the ability to twist studs into place via a propriery fixing mechanism, rather than using nail or screw fixings to plates. Fire and noise construction can be determined via the addition of gypsum board and other construction layers. The mid piece could potentially be made out of low strength timber or even plywood. Apart from potential in residential partition walls, this component may also have usage in the commercial partition wall market.
Not a load-bearing element, and so not fit for structural walls.
