Smartroof attic storage and room space

This technology derives from the inexpensive provision of attic storage and room spaces as a design theme. The theme is common in Europe and North America. Roof piches are typically lower in Australia but there is still potential to adapt this idea especially in teh likes of townhouse developments where storage space is at a premium. Of the prefabricated versions of attic construction, one of the simplist in terms of fabrication and site based crane installation is the Smartroof system (another is the JJ-IntelliRoof system). In the Smartroof System, the gable ended walls are used as the support for long horizontal cassette type panels that come to site in prefabricated form. The panels use relatively standard timber framing and sheathing componentry. The roof space remains free of interfering structure thus allowing storage and/or room space.

Benefits

Cheap storage space that could be developed later as the house and family grow. Fast and relatively simple offsite fabrication and onsite erection. Best suited to gabled row housing or townhouse developments.

Limitations

Safety requirements concerning the end use of the space as storage. Only suited to a limited number of housing forms and where economies of scale exist. Care would need to be taken that the panels were supported in a way that did not adversely effect the fire and sound performance typically required of gable walls separating townhouses. On-site installation is likely to be fast but would require crane usage.
