Lignatur Floor/Ceiling Plate System
Lignatur is a hollow box system forming a timber equivalent of pre-cast concrete planks about 1.0m wide. Planks can be joined together to form floor/ceiling plates but evenso, the system is essentially a hollow plank, one way spanning system. There are several variants of the system – mainly concerning the shape and form of the top and bottom diaphragm layers of the system which influence noise, fire, thermal and structural performance. Depths vary to suit spanning requirements and will comfortably cope with domestic construction applications, plus much longer spanning situations.
The hollow multibox cross section with regularly spaced bulkheads is structurally efficient with good material use - spanning ability is very good. The hollow sections provide space for noise and thermal insulation, and can also accommodate services pipe and wiring (though this is clearly easier in the spanning direction than the perpendicular direction). It is likely the units could be locally manufactured with better quality Radiata or Hoop Pine though sophisticated manufacturing processes will likely impact on cost. Lignatur planks could have a role as horizontal structural elements with conventional wall frames.
The system is less massive than concrete and therefore the acoustic and insulation performance is lower than concrete. Its best application is likley to be in multi-storey applications.
Structurecraft are a contractor specialising in the engineering, design detailing, supply and fabrication of complex, large and challenging timber structures. Though there is nothing especially groundbreaking about the panelized systems that they use, they occupy a worthwhile link in the supply chain that largely does not currently exist...
