The SoundBar System
The SoundBar system is an acoustic floor system made up of three components:
- Finforest I-joists (FinnJoist) for the structural load-bearing part of the system.
- Finnforest SoundBar board on top, which acts as a sound-deadening material, minimising transfer between floors.
- Gyvlon (by Lafarge) pumpable screed placed on top of the board. The screed is self levelling, quick drying and gives the floor a smooth finish.
The system provides similar noise performance to a solid concrete floor.
Improved acoustic performance for timber construction, with potentially reduced building time relative to other sound resistant construction.
The I-joist cannot be used in high humidity/exposed weather. The screed weight will add load to the timber structure and so structural members may need to re-sized to handle the increased load. Introduction of a wet trade via the use of a self levelling compound is potentially a drawback as is the potential need for extra supervision and procurement of specialist subcontracting services that do not currently exist in the market.
The system adds in the order of 75mm onto the finished floor height and so this would need to be taken into account in the overall design.
Structurecraft are a contractor specialising in the engineering, design detailing, supply and fabrication of complex, large and challenging timber structures. Though there is nothing especially groundbreaking about the panelized systems that they use, they occupy a worthwhile link in the supply chain that largely does not currently exist...
