Very high performance thermal and fire insulation that is very thin, lightweight and rigid. It is a synthetic porous material derived from a gel, in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas. The result is a rigid material with extremely low density and thermal conductivity. Its consistency is similar to expanded polystyrene. Aerogels are good thermally because the gas compoonent means that the material is a very poor conductor of heat and air cannot circulate through the cell lattice, thus reducing convective heat transfer.
Negates the need for depth in timber framework to fit thermal insulation and may be useful in the development of things like thin panelised wall manufacture. Potentially, very useful in fire resistant timber construction.
